MEETING MY SPONSOR CHILD IN INDIA

When I was 11 years old, my parents brought me to church and told me we would be sponsoring a little girl from India. Each year as she grew older and with every letter that was exchanged, it became my dream to travel to India to meet her. For my 25th birthday, I traveled to India and met my sponsor child, Athuyla. It was the biggest accomplishment of my life.

Organising this trip wasn't as easy as just flying to India and meeting Athuyla. It involved months of organising which consisted of heaps of paperwork through the agency (Chalice). I had to apply for my India visa enterance, get a police clearance, have up-to-date vaccinations, organise my flights and coordinate dates with the convent where I stayed during my visit. I also needed to receieve approval from Athuyla's family for me to visit (when they recieved the news that I wanted to come and meet her, they couldn't believe that it was true, as no other sponsor children that she knows of had ever recieved a visit from their sponsor before).

After everything was approved, I flew to Bangalore, India (from Queensland, Australia). A total of 3 planes (19 hours in the air), an hour long taxi to the convent from the airport, an 6 hour drive through the rain forest on a beat up coach bus and finally, a 30 minute drive in a tuk-tuk up the mountain to get to her village.

It's crazy to think, every time I go somewhere new, on my own, as a solo female traveler, that I'm never afraid. I don't know what it is - but nothing really scares me. I just knew in my heart that this experience would change my life forever and I was so completely ready to finally meet her in person after exchanging letters and photos from her for more than 12 years.

Once I arrived at the convent, one of the sisters informed me Athuyla was on her way. It was a pretty intense feeling that overcame me - I don't have a sister, but it felt like I was about to meet my sister for the first time, as if we were once seperated. When my family first sponsored Athuyla, she was only 6 years old. Today, she is a healthy (due to my parents assistance), beautiful young 18 year old adultescent.
